Description

Deutsche Reichspost Postsparbuch with Ausweiskarte: Overview

A wartime German postal savings set comprising the red Postsparbuch and its identification card (Ausweiskarte), both with the account number 6.954.113. The card states that book and card had to be presented together for withdrawals, so a matching pair preserves the working relationship between the two.

Deutsche Reichspost Postsparbuch with Ausweiskarte: Description

  • Postsparbuch: red cover printed “Deutsche Reichspost – Postsparbuch” with eagle device and account number; Knesebeck, Hannover post office cancellation; interior pages with handwritten deposits and withdrawals and postal stamps
  • Ausweiskarte: “Ausweiskarte zum Postsparbuch Nr. 6.954.113”, matching number, printed instructions
  • Inventory code: DOC53

Historical Context

Postal savings were an everyday banking service run by the Reichspost. A used savings book is a civilian financial record, and it gives a more personal view of daily life in the war years than most official documents.

Condition

Red covers with toning, handling wear, rubbing, light staining and minor edge wear; the spine is present with use wear. Interior entries and stamps are legible, and the card is visually strong. The photographs show the actual pieces and form part of the description.

Provenance

No further provenance is recorded.

Authenticity

Offered as an original period document on the basis of paper, printing, stamps, handwriting and ageing, which are consistent with each other and with the dates recorded.

Care

Store flat in an archival sleeve or acid-free folder. The red covers fade easily, so avoid strong light.
