CONDITION OF HISTORICAL ITEMS
1. Nature of Historical Collectibles
Autographs & Militaria is a private collector’s catalogue dedicated to original historical autographs, documents, medals, militaria, coins, banknotes and related collectible material.
All items offered through this website are antique, vintage, historical, second-hand or collector’s objects, unless clearly stated otherwise.
These items are not new commercial products. They may have passed through different owners, collections, storage conditions, countries or historical contexts before becoming part of this catalogue.
For this reason, signs of age, handling, use and preservation are expected and form part of the nature of historical collecting.
2. Original Items Unless Stated Otherwise
All items are offered as original unless clearly stated otherwise.
If an item is ever offered as a reproduction, facsimile, later copy, reference piece or non-original item, this will be clearly indicated in the description or during the direct enquiry process.
Autographs & Militaria does not intentionally present reproductions or facsimiles as original historical items.
3. Condition Is Part of the Historical Character
Historical collectibles may show natural signs of age, use, storage or handling.
These may include, but are not limited to:
– Wear.
– Stains.
– Folds.
– Creases.
– Paper toning.
– Foxing.
– Tears.
– Small losses.
– Discolouration.
– Oxidation.
– Patina.
– Surface marks.
– Scratches.
– Framing marks.
– Mounting remains.
– Glue traces.
– Pinholes.
– Old repairs.
– Edge wear.
– Ink fading.
– Handling marks.
– Storage marks.
– Period use.
– Later annotations.
Such characteristics do not automatically constitute defects. In many cases, they are part of the historical nature, age and authenticity of the item.
4. Photographs as Part of the Description
Photographs form an essential part of each item description.
Buyers are expected to review all available photographs carefully before confirming interest in an item.
Images may show the general condition, visible wear, age-related marks, inscriptions, signatures, stamps, seals, reverse side, details, edges, packaging or other relevant features.
If a buyer requires further clarification, additional photographs may be requested before confirming an acquisition.
5. Additional Photographs and Condition Details
Autographs & Militaria welcomes serious and respectful requests for additional photographs, close-ups or condition details.
Additional images may be requested for:
– Signatures.
– Handwritten notes.
– Stamps or seals.
– Medal details.
– Ribbons or attachments.
– Reverse sides.
– Paper condition.
– Edges and corners.
– Certificates or provenance documents.
– Framed or mounted items.
– High-value collector pieces.
Buyers are encouraged to ask any condition-related questions before proceeding.
6. Sold as Collector’s Items in Their Current Condition
All items are offered as historical collector’s items in their current condition.
Because each item is unique, old and part of a private collecting context, condition should be evaluated individually and with reference to the photographs, description and any additional information provided.
By confirming an acquisition, the buyer acknowledges that they have had the opportunity to review the item, ask questions, request additional photographs and assess its condition before proceeding.
7. No Assumption of Modern Perfection
Historical items should not be assessed according to the standards of new commercial goods.
Age-related wear, natural deterioration, historical use, oxidation, paper ageing, storage marks or minor imperfections are common in collectible material and should be expected.
The presence of such characteristics does not necessarily affect the historical, collector or research value of an item.
8. Documents, Paper and Autographs
Historical documents, letters, signed papers, autographs and manuscripts may show:
– Paper toning.
– Ink fading.
– Folds.
– Creases.
– Handling marks.
– Tears or edge wear.
– Stains.
– Old mounting traces.
– Archival repairs.
– Later notes or annotations.
– Variations in paper texture, colour or thickness.
These characteristics are common in old paper material and must be considered part of the object’s age and history unless specifically stated otherwise.
9. Medals, Militaria and Metal Items
Medals, badges, insignia, decorations, coins and other metal items may show:
– Patina.
– Oxidation.
– Wear.
– Surface scratches.
– Loss of finish.
– Tarnish.
– Ribbon wear.
– Storage marks.
– Manufacturing variations.
– Signs of previous cleaning or handling.
Such characteristics may be normal in period militaria and historical metal objects.
10. Framed, Mounted or Displayed Items
Some items may have been previously framed, mounted, stored in albums, displayed or attached to backing materials.
This may result in:
– Mounting marks.
– Glue traces.
– Tape marks.
– Paper residue.
– Frame pressure marks.
– Uneven toning.
– Backing remains.
Where visible or relevant, such details may be shown in photographs or described during the enquiry process.
11. Measurements and Colours
Measurements, colours and visual appearance are provided as accurately as reasonably possible.
However, slight variations may occur due to:
– Lighting conditions.
– Camera settings.
– Screen display differences.
– Ageing of paper, metal, fabric or ink.
– Manual measurement differences.
Buyers may request additional photographs or measurements before confirming interest.
12. Good Faith Descriptions
All condition descriptions are provided in good faith, based on visual assessment, collector experience, available documentation and the information available at the time of listing.
Autographs & Militaria makes reasonable efforts to describe items accurately and transparently.
However, due to the age, uniqueness and historical nature of the material, condition descriptions should be read together with photographs and any additional information provided directly.
13. Buyer Responsibility
Before confirming an acquisition, buyers should review:
– The full item description.
– All photographs.
– Condition notes.
– Authenticity information.
– Provenance or certificate details, where applicable.
– SKU or reference number.
– Price and availability confirmation.
– Payment and shipping terms.
Buyers should ask any questions before confirming an acquisition.
Once an item has been confirmed, the buyer acknowledges that the item has been offered as a historical collector’s object in its described and photographed condition.
14. Changes and Corrections
If new information regarding condition, authenticity, provenance or description becomes available, Autographs & Militaria reserves the right to update, correct, amend, withdraw or revise any listing before a transaction is finalised.
Availability, condition and details should always be confirmed directly before purchase.
