Description
This original Ostmedaille, officially the Medaille “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42” (Winter Battle in the East), is the German campaign medal for the first winter on the Eastern Front. It retains a strong contrast between its darkened field and lighter rim and helmet, sharp obverse and reverse detail, and a well-coloured length of its red campaign ribbon.
What is the Ostmedaille?
The medal was instituted by decree of 26 May 1942 for participation in the fighting on the Eastern Front between 15 November 1941 and 15 April 1942. According to the Deutsches Historisches Museum, it was awarded to members of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS who had taken part in at least 14 days of combat (30 sorties for Luftwaffe aircrew), served at least 60 days without interruption in the area, been wounded and qualified for the Wound Badge, or suffered frostbite.
It was awarded in very large numbers and is not a rare medal. Its lasting interest comes from what it represents: the winter of 1941–42 in front of Moscow and along the Eastern Front, one of the defining and most costly episodes of the Second World War. Among soldiers it acquired grim informal nicknames such as Gefrierfleischorden (“Order of the Frozen Meat”); these were never official titles.
How is it identified?
The obverse shows the Wehrmacht-style eagle holding the period state emblem, with a laurel branch behind. Above the medal body sits a steel helmet resting on a stick grenade, which also forms the suspension for the ribbon ring. The reverse reads WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42 above a crossed sword and laurel branch.
The finish combines a darkened field with lighter, silver-coloured rim and helmet. The ribbon is red with a narrow central stripe of white, black and white. The Deutsches Historisches Museum example measures 4.5 × 3.6 cm.
Many surviving examples were struck in zinc. The appearance of INS98 is consistent with that, but I do not assign a specific alloy or maker without physical examination. No maker mark is visible on INS98; where makers marked this medal, the number usually appears on the ribbon ring, and unmarked examples are common.
Why collect it?
The Ostmedaille is one of the most recognisable German campaign medals of the war and a key piece in any collection documenting the Eastern Front. It also connects directly to service records: the award was entered in a soldier’s Soldbuch and Wehrpass. See, for example, our Wehrpass group from the 256th Infantry Division with an Ostmedaille entry (DOC172).
Collector’s Note
An Ostmedaille is best understood alongside the documents that recorded it. Look for the Ostmedaille entry in a soldier’s Wehrpass or Soldbuch: it turns a common Ostmedaille into part of an individual story.
