Original German Mother’s Cross in Bronze: Overview

A Mother’s Cross in its bronze grade with the central inscription “Der Deutschen Mutter” and its blue and white ribbon. The reverse carries the date “16. Dezember 1938” and the printed facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler.

Historical Context

The Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter was instituted on 16 December 1938 as part of the regime’s family and population policy and awarded in bronze, silver and gold. The bronze grade was for mothers of four or five children. It is a civil award, documenting social policy rather than combat.
