Description

WWII German Wound Badge in Black: Overview

A grouping of a full-size Wound Badge in Black, a matching miniature stickpin and a period paper packet printed in Gothic script “Verwundeten-Abzeichen Schwarz”. Together they make a more complete display than a loose badge.

Historical Context

The Wound Badge originated in the First World War and was reintroduced for the Second. It existed in three grades: Black, Silver and Gold, the black grade being the first level. Miniatures were worn when the full-size award was inappropriate, for example on civilian clothing. Original packets show how decorations were issued and stored.
