Description

Winter Relief Fund Certificate: Overview

A large “Ehrenurkunde” of the Winterhilfswerk des Deutschen Volkes, recognising voluntary service in the 1936–37 campaign against hunger and cold. It carries the printed facsimile signatures of Joseph Goebbels (“Reichsminister”, lower right) and Erich Hilgenfeldt (“Reichsbeauftragter”, lower left) around an embossed central seal. Both signatures are printed facsimiles, not autographs.

The certificate is named to Emil Brettmann; the name has been struck through in ink, so this is an amended example.

Historical Context

The Winterhilfswerk was the state-controlled winter relief and fundraising organisation of the regime, overseen by the Propaganda Ministry. Its certificates are studied today as records of propaganda, welfare administration and social mobilisation under dictatorship.

Condition

Extensive folds, creasing, rippling, light toning and handling wear, with a small tear near the seal. The photographs show the actual document and form part of the description.

No further provenance is recorded.

Authenticity

Offered as an original period document on the basis of paper, printing, stamps, handwriting and ageing, which are consistent with each other and with the dates recorded.

Care

Store flat in an acid-free sleeve and handle with care because of the weakness near the seal; never use tape or glue.
