Description

Wehrpass: Overview

A pre-war Wehrpass issued in Krefeld on 8 August 1939 to Hermann Dewin, with the standard grey cover and eagle, the printed contents page, the mustering section, Wehrbezirkskommando Krefeld stamps and handwritten entries dated 1939 and 1941. It comes with two associated papers that make the group more than a lightly filled booklet.

Described honestly: the pages photographed show an administrative registration record, not a combat-used Wehrpass. Nothing is claimed about unit service, campaigns or awards.

The Associated Papers

  • Wehrpass notice, April 1943: a loose printed form naming Hermann Dewin, born 7 May 1907, relating to registration or reporting obligations, with handwriting and a Krefeld stamp.
  • French birth extract: an extract from the birth register of Sarreguemines (Moselle) for Armand Dewin, son of Frédéric Dewin and Jeanne Müller. The first name differs from the Wehrpass, so it is described as an associated document of the Dewin name; that it concerns the same person is not claimed.

Historical Context

The Wehrpass was the German military service record book, held by the authorities and recording registration, mustering and later service, as distinct from the Soldbuch carried in the field. The French document and the Sarreguemines (Saargemünd) connection add a border-region dimension to the group.
