Description
Wehrmacht Soviet Union Booklet: Overview
Heft 53 of the Tornisterschrift series of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, published in 1941 under the title “Schlag nach über die Sowjetunion” (“Reference work on the Soviet Union”). The cover states “Nur für den Gebrauch innerhalb der Wehrmacht” (for use within the Wehrmacht only) and “Nicht sammeln, sondern weitergeben!” (do not collect; pass it on), which explains why surviving copies are not common.
Historical Context
The Tornisterschriften were compact booklets for soldiers to carry and circulate. This issue presents the Soviet Union from the perspective of the German wartime administration in the year of the invasion, and its content reflects the political assumptions and propaganda of the time. It is valuable today as evidence of what German soldiers were told.
