Description

War Merit Cross Document: Overview

An original award certificate for the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse (War Merit Cross 2nd Class), issued in Berlin on 30 January 1944 to Reichsbahnsekretär Eduard Weber of Oebisfelde. It links the award directly to the German railway administration in the later years of the war.

Beneath the printed title “Der Führer” is the period facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler. It is part of the printed document and is not offered as a handwritten autograph. A handwritten countersignature at lower right appears to read “Meissner”; this reading has not been independently authenticated and is given with caution.

Historical Context

The War Merit Cross was instituted in 1939 for meritorious service to the war effort, in both military and civilian roles. The Reichsbahn was essential to wartime logistics, moving personnel, materials and supplies across the network. Award documents preserve the recipient’s name, occupation, place and date, which the decoration alone does not.
