Description
War Merit Cross Award Document: Overview
An original award certificate for the Kriegsverdienstkreuz 2. Klasse (War Merit Cross 2nd Class), issued in Berlin on 1 September 1941 to Franz Plschockt of Hamburg, recorded in the document as an Aushilfsheizer (auxiliary stoker).
Beneath the printed title “Der Führer” is the period facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler. It is part of the printed document and is not offered as a handwritten autograph. Several further period signatures or countersignatures appear in the lower section.
Historical Context
The War Merit Cross was instituted in 1939 for services to the war effort that did not qualify for a combat decoration. The 2nd Class became one of the most widely issued German awards of the period. Surviving certificates are more informative than the decoration alone, because they identify the recipient, date and place of issue.
