Description
Walter Bürger signed document and original Reichsbahn archive
Walter Bürger signed document group consisting of four original period documents connected to the career and service record of German railway employee Eduard Weber between 1934 and 1941.
Rather than four unrelated papers, these documents form a coherent named group. They record Weber’s recognition as a First World War veteran, his progression through the Deutsche Reichsbahn administration and his award for long public service.
The principal item from an autograph-collecting point of view is the large appointment certificate dated 2 July 1941, issued in Hannover when Weber was promoted from Reichsbahnassistent to Reichsbahnsekretär.
At the bottom it is issued:
“Für den Reichsverkehrsminister – Der Präsident der Reichsbahndirektion”
and carries an original handwritten signature of Dr. Walter Bürger, then President of the Reichsbahndirektion Hannover.
Bürger headed the Hannover railway directorate from 1933 until 1945. His position placed him at the head of one of the regional administrative divisions of the Deutsche Reichsbahn.
The identification of the 1941 signature as an original Walter Bürger signature is also consistent with an earlier specialist description of this exact document group.
The four documents included
1. Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer award certificate – 3 December 1934
Issued at Gardelegen to Eduard Weber, then described as Hilfsbetriebsassistent in Oebisfelde.
The document records the award of the Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer, the Honour Cross for First World War frontline veterans.
It retains its official administrative stamp and bears an original signature of the responsible Landrat. The document shows folds, handling and age-related wear consistent with an official paper that was retained for many decades.
2. Reichsbahn appointment certificate – 17 March 1939
Issued in Hannover and promoting Eduard Weber from Reichsbahnbetriebsassistent to Reichsbahnassistent.
The large-format document begins with the period formula “Im Namen des Führers und Reichskanzlers” and was issued through the Reichsbahndirektion Hannover.
The Walter Bürger signature appearing on this 1939 certificate is a period facsimile signature and not a handwritten autograph. This distinction is important and is stated clearly for collector transparency. The earlier specialist description of this exact certificate likewise identifies the Bürger signature as facsimile.
3. Silver Faithful Service award certificate – 14 June 1939
Issued in Berlin to Eduard Weber in recognition of 25 years of faithful service and awarding the Silbernes Treudienst-Ehrenzeichen.
The document is issued under the office of the:
Staatsminister und Chef der Präsidialkanzlei des Führers und Reichskanzlers.
The signature reading Meissner is a period facsimile of Otto Meissner, rather than a personally handwritten autograph. The same identification appears in the previous specialist description of this document group.
This is worth stating explicitly because the document itself remains an original period award certificate even though the signature was mechanically reproduced.
4. Reichsbahn promotion certificate – 2 July 1941
The strongest document in the group.
Issued in Hannover, it records Weber’s promotion from Reichsbahnassistent to Reichsbahnsekretär and carries an original handwritten Walter Bürger signature.
This Walter Bürger signed document is particularly interesting because Bürger was serving as President of the Reichsbahndirektion Hannover at exactly this period.
The signature has been applied in ink beneath the administrative title, alongside the embossed official seal.
A small Reichsbahn career archive
From a collector’s point of view, keeping these papers together makes considerably more sense than splitting them.
Together they establish a chronological progression:
1934 — First World War veteran award
1939 — promotion to Reichsbahnassistent
1939 — recognition for 25 years of service
1941 — promotion to Reichsbahnsekretär
That continuity gives the group documentary value beyond that of four isolated certificates.
The Walter Bürger signed document from 1941 is the autograph centrepiece, while the remaining certificates provide the named historical context around Eduard Weber’s railway career.
Historical context
The Deutsche Reichsbahn was Germany’s national railway organisation during this period, with regional railway directorates responsible for large operating districts. The Reichsbahndirektion Hannover administered an extensive railway region covering parts of northern and central Germany. Walter Bürger served as its president throughout the period represented by these documents.
These papers therefore illustrate not only one man’s employment record but also the administrative structure of the German state railway during the 1930s and the Second World War.
The wording and political symbols appearing on the certificates form part of the historical bureaucracy under which they were produced. Their inclusion here is documentary rather than ideological.
Collector’s interest
The main appeal of the group lies in several areas:
- all four documents relate to the same named individual;
- dates span seven years of his administrative career;
- two substantial Reichsbahn promotion certificates are included;
- the 1941 document contains an original Walter Bürger autograph;
- the facsimile signatures on the other certificates are correctly identified rather than presented as handwritten signatures;
- period stamps, embossed seals, typography and official formatting remain visible;
- the group combines railway history, autograph collecting, award documentation and German administrative history.
The Walter Bürger signed document gives the set an additional autograph dimension that a normal Reichsbahn paperwork group would not necessarily have.
Condition & authenticity
All four pieces are offered as original period documents.
The documents display age-related wear, including folds, creasing, handling marks, edge wear, punched filing holes and general toning. Some embossed state seals show period alteration or denazification of the central political emblem.
The photographs form an important part of the condition description and should be examined carefully.
Authenticity is guaranteed as described.
For complete transparency:
- 1941 Walter Bürger signature: original handwritten signature.
- 1939 Walter Bürger signature: period facsimile.
- 1939 Otto Meissner signature: period facsimile.
- 1934 Landrat signature: original administrative signature.
The phrase “Im Namen des Führers und Reichskanzlers” appearing on the documents is an official administrative formula. None of the documents is being offered as signed by Adolf Hitler.
That distinction is important both historically and for autograph collectors.
Historical responsibility notice
These items are offered exclusively as original historical, documentary and collecting material.
Autographs & Militaria has no political or ideological affiliation with National Socialism or any extremist organisation. Period terminology, insignia and symbols are described only where necessary for accurate historical identification.
