Description
Original Viktor Lutze Cut Signature
This original Viktor Lutze cut signature is a period autograph written in dark ink on a small rectangular fragment of light-coloured paper.
The handwritten surname appears to read:
“Lutze”
The autograph has been framed with a black paper or card border and mounted onto a larger brown album leaf. The surrounding backing is irregular and heavily torn, indicating that it was probably removed from an older autograph album, archive sheet or private collector’s presentation.
The reverse bears handwritten identification reading approximately:
“Viktor Lutze – SA Chief”
together with several additional collector’s notes and an unrelated signature or ownership inscription. These reverse annotations were added after the original autograph and should not be confused with handwriting by Lutze.
This piece must be accurately described as a cut signature, not a complete signed letter, document or photograph.
Viktor Lutze Autograph Characteristics
The signature is written in a dark ink or similar writing medium and occupies most of the small paper fragment.
Its principal visual characteristics include:
- A large and elevated opening capital.
- A broad upper loop extending across the beginning of the surname.
- A compact central group of connected letters.
- A long descending movement towards the right.
- A looped final formation.
- Natural changes in line thickness and ink density.
- A rapid and confident overall execution.
The handwriting is visually compatible with published examples of Viktor Lutze’s autograph. Surviving signed documents and photographs show that Lutze often used a compact surname with a prominent initial and extended terminal movement. Specialist dealers have documented signatures written both in ink and in the green pencil frequently associated with his official correspondence.
The signature appears complete within the boundaries of the cut paper. However, as the surrounding document has been removed, no date, rank, dedication or recipient remains.
Cut Signature and Album Presentation
A cut signature is an autograph physically removed from a larger letter, card, document or album page.
This collecting practice was particularly common during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Collectors often retained only the handwritten name and mounted it in an album beside a portrait, newspaper clipping or biographical note.
The format provides a compact display piece, but it also removes much of the original documentary context. In this case, it is no longer possible to determine:
- The type of document originally signed.
- The exact date of the autograph.
- The place where it was signed.
- The recipient or intended purpose.
- Whether additional handwriting originally accompanied it.
The surviving mount nevertheless has historical collecting interest. The black frame appears intentionally prepared to display the signature, while the rough brown backing and handwritten reverse notes indicate that the piece once formed part of an older organised collection.
Viktor Lutze and the Leadership of the SA
Viktor Lutze was born in 1890 and became a prominent member of the German National Socialist movement and the Sturmabteilung, commonly known as the SA.
Following the killing of Ernst Röhm during the 1934 purge of the SA leadership, Lutze was appointed the organisation’s new Stabschef, or Chief of Staff. He retained that position until his death in May 1943. The German Federal Archives also records him as a National Socialist member of the Reichstag and as Oberpräsident of the Province of Hanover.
Under Lutze, the SA remained a large organisation but lost much of the political influence it had held before 1934. His period as chief was marked by reorganisation, reduced independence and the increasing dominance of the SS and the regular armed forces within the German state.
The German Federal Archives preserves numerous press photographs identifying Lutze as the newly appointed SA Chief of Staff and showing him at official events, including the 1934 Nuremberg rally.
Historical Significance
Lutze is closely connected with the internal transformation of the SA following the Night of the Long Knives.
His autograph is therefore relevant to several specialised collecting areas:
- German political history of the 1930s.
- The organisation and leadership of the SA.
- The aftermath of the 1934 purge.
- National Socialist political administration.
- Reichstag personalities.
- Pre-1945 German autographs.
- Historical album and cut-signature collecting.
Lutze died in May 1943 following a motor accident. The Institute of Contemporary History identifies him as SA Chief of Staff from his appointment after Röhm’s killing in 1934 until his accidental death in 1943.
His death before the end of the Second World War naturally limited the period during which his signatures could be obtained, contributing to their specialist interest today.
Market Comparison
Complete Viktor Lutze material can command substantially more than detached signatures.
The present piece is more modest because it lacks the original document, date and direct historical context. Its strengths are the large and clearly visible signature, old album presentation, reverse identification and the relative scarcity of authentic Lutze autographs.
Condition
The signed paper displays natural age toning, scattered small marks and minor surface wear.
The ink remains dark, complete and clearly visible. No major tear appears to cross the principal handwritten strokes.
The narrow black frame shows light edge wear and small surface marks. The larger brown backing sheet is incomplete and has heavily irregular, torn edges, areas of loss, creasing, staining and general age-related wear.
The reverse contains several handwritten collector’s annotations. These markings are part of the object’s later collecting history but were not written as part of the principal Lutze autograph.
The item should be handled by its backing rather than directly by the signed paper. The supplied photographs form an essential part of the condition description.
