Description

Third Reich German Badge Lot: Overview

Five different German political, commemorative and event badges of the 1930s, each with its natural ageing, oxidation and patina. The maker-marked 1 Mai 1938 badge and the portrait badge give the group a clear identification.

What the Lot Contains

  • 1 Mai 1938 badge: circular Tag der Arbeit (Labour Day) badge with national eagle and figures; pin fitting present; maker marked Ferd. Wagner, Pforzheim, a recorded maker of this badge.
  • Portrait badge: gilt-coloured circular badge with the left-facing profile of Adolf Hitler and the slogan “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Führer”; the gilt finish is considerably worn.
  • Referendum-type badge: circular, with central emblem and radiating lines, a design associated with the badges of the 10 April 1938 referendum.
  • Geometric badge: silver-coloured, radial design with raised central boss; horizontal pin present.
  • Stickpin: small oak-leaf design with German inscription; long pin attached.

Third Reich German Badge Lot: Description

Condition

Visibly used: surface oxidation, finish loss, discolouration, scratches, handling marks, wear to raised details and ageing of the pin mechanisms. Nothing has been polished, as aggressive cleaning removes original finish. Both sides are photographed and form part of the description.

Provenance

No further provenance is recorded.

Authenticity

The pieces are identified from their design, inscriptions and construction. Where these do not allow a confident identification, no attribution is made. A more detailed opinion on any individual piece is available on request.
