Description

Third Reich Badges: Overview

A cross-section of German political portraiture, national symbolism, commemorative imagery and public-event material, sold as the complete group shown in the photographs, with fronts and reverses. Silver, bronze and gold-tone finishes and several attachment systems are represented.

What the Group Contains

  • Portrait pieces: a circular medallion with a profile portrait inscribed “Adolf Hitler” and dated 1935; a gold-tone portrait pin; and a circular piece with a portrait and the words “Der Führer dankt”, with dates of 1933–1934.
  • Turn- und Sportfest badge: eagle with surrounding lettering referring to a German gymnastics and sports festival.
  • Tag der Arbeit piece: silver-tone, workers above the national eagle.
  • “Wir fahren gegen England” medallion: substantial, bronze-coloured, with a military portrait; the phrase belongs to wartime patriotic and military culture.
  • Cased medal: a larger medal with a handshake beneath the emblem and German text, in a presentation-style case. A second case, empty, is included.

Historical Context

Badges, event pins and medallions were produced in enormous variety between 1933 and 1945 for political events, holidays, welfare campaigns, sporting meetings, party organisations and military themes. Most were made for civilians and event participants rather than as formal decorations, which is why they document how political imagery entered everyday material culture.
