Description

SA Gruppe Hochland 1939 Winner Badge: Overview

A first-prize plaque from the 1939 SA-Gruppe Hochland group competitions. The reverse inscription “Dem 1. Sieger” (to the first winner) identifies it as a winner’s award rather than a participation badge, and it carries the RZM control mark M3/41.

Historical Context

Regional SA groups held sporting competitions in the late 1930s and issued badges and awards for them. The edelweiss reflects the regional identity of the Hochland group, associated with southern Bavaria. The combination of named group, date, inscription, award grade and RZM mark gives the piece a clear identity.

SA Gruppe Hochland 1939 Winner Badge: Description

  • Obverse: edelweiss with vertical sword, date 1939 on the blade, border inscribed “SA-Gruppe Hochland” and “SA-Gruppen Wettkämpfe”
  • Reverse: “Dem 1. Sieger”; RZM M3/41
  • Material: zinc, gold-toned finish
  • Size: approx. 48–50 mm across
  • Fitting: missing
  • Inventory code: INS79

Condition

Good for a 1939 zinc award: strong relief and an attractive aged gold colour, with surface wear, light scratches and handling marks. The rear attachment is missing and has not been replaced. Only the plaque is included. The photographs show the actual piece and form part of the description.

Provenance

No further provenance is recorded.

Authenticity

Offered as an original period award on the basis of material, strike, finish, inscription and RZM marking, which are consistent with each other.

Care

Store dry, ideally in an inert archival holder, and never polish with abrasives: the original finish is part of its historical value.
