Original WWII German NSDAP Armband: Overview

A political armband of the NSDAP in multi-piece textile construction: a red band, a separately applied white circular field and a black emblem at the centre. The reverse shows the circular line of stitching that attaches the roundel, which allows the construction to be examined directly.

Historical Context

The red, white and black armband was one of the principal identifying devices of the NSDAP and was worn on party uniforms. In collecting terminology it is usually called an NSDAP armband, Parteiarmbinde or Kampfbinde. Period examples vary considerably in fabric, construction, maker and markings, and multi-piece examples are useful for comparative study.

This object belongs to the material culture of a dictatorship. It is documented here as a historical artefact, and its symbolism is part of its historical identity, not something endorsed.

Condition

Visible age and handling: tonal variation, creasing and general wear to the red cloth. The white roundel remains clearly defined and the black emblem retains strong contrast. Stitching and surface imperfections are visible in the photographs, which form part of the description.
