Description
Karl Wolff Signed Letter from Himmler’s Personal Staff, 1938
This original Karl Wolff signed letter was issued in Berlin on 11 August 1938 from the office of the Reichsführer-SS, Chief of the Personal Staff, and addressed to SS-Obergruppenführer Krüger, identifiable with high confidence as Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger.
The one-page typed official correspondence carries Karl Wolff’s large original handwritten ink signature above his typed rank:
SS-Gruppenführer
The document belongs to the internal administrative correspondence of Heinrich Himmler’s immediate staff and records the authorisation of an additional monthly allowance for Krüger in recognition of his numerous representational duties and occasions when he acted on behalf of the Reichsführer-SS.
This is therefore not simply a detached Karl Wolff autograph. It is a complete named document linking two senior SS officers within Himmler’s administrative structure.
Translation of the Main Text
The central paragraph can be translated as follows:
“I refer to our telephone conversation today and inform you that the Reichsführer-SS, in view of your numerous representational duties and occasions on which you represent the Reichsführer-SS, is making available to you a monthly allowance of RM 100, retroactive from 1 July 1938. The amount will be transferred to you at the beginning of each month by the cashier’s office of the Personal Staff RFSS.”
The content is bureaucratic rather than operational, but that is precisely what makes the document useful as historical evidence.
It illustrates the routine financial and administrative mechanisms operating inside the immediate office of Heinrich Himmler: telephone consultation, written confirmation, personal allowances and payments administered through the treasury of the Persönlicher Stab Reichsführer-SS.
Karl Wolff and the Personal Staff of Heinrich Himmler
Karl Friedrich Otto Wolff was born in 1900 and joined both the NSDAP and SS in 1931.
He became a full-time SS officer in 1933 and was appointed adjutant to Heinrich Himmler in July of that year. His rise was rapid. By January 1937 he held the rank of SS-Gruppenführer, the rank printed beneath his signature on this document.
In 1936 Wolff became Chef des Persönlichen Stabes des Reichsführers-SS, Chief of the Personal Staff of the Reichsführer-SS. Deutsche Biographie describes him as a central managerial figure within Himmler’s system, handling administrative, financial and organisational matters and maintaining connections between Himmler and other institutions. Biografía Alemana
The heading on DOC177 therefore corresponds exactly with Wolff’s position at the date of issue:
Der Reichsführer-SS
Der Chef des Persönl. Stabes
This direct institutional relationship significantly improves the historical context of the autograph.
Rather than a later signed photograph or postwar autograph, the signature appears on a document created in the office Wolff actually headed.
The Recipient – SS-Obergruppenführer Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger
The letter is addressed simply to:
SS-Obergruppenführer Krüger
Berlin
The rank, surname, date and administrative context point very strongly to Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger.
Contemporary Bundesarchiv documentation records that on 16 May 1938, only three months before this letter, Krüger was appointed Inspekteur der gesamten SS-Reiterei, Inspector of the entire SS cavalry, and placed directly under the Chief of the SS-Hauptamt.
That fact becomes particularly useful when examining the original sheet.
At the bottom of DOC177 appears a purple SS-Hauptamt receiving stamp dated:
18 AUG. 1938
The combination of the recipient’s rank, Berlin location, 1938 appointment and SS-Hauptamt routing provides strong documentary support for identifying the recipient as Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger rather than merely leaving him as an unidentified “Krüger.”
Krüger later became Higher SS and Police Leader in the General Government in occupied Poland. United States Holocaust Memorial Museum documentation places him in that senior role during the implementation of German occupation and mass-murder policy.
That later history should be acknowledged, but it should not be projected backwards onto the administrative subject of this 1938 letter.
An Internal Financial Document
One of the more interesting aspects of this Karl Wolff signed letter is its subject.
The document does not concern a military decoration, promotion or combat operation.
Instead, it records an additional monthly payment of:
RM 100
authorised by Heinrich Himmler because of Krüger’s numerous:
“Repräsentationspflichten”
and his representation of the Reichsführer-SS.
The allowance was retrospective from 1 July 1938.
The document further specifies that the money was to be transferred at the beginning of each month by the cashier of the Personal Staff of the Reichsführer-SS.
For collectors interested in institutional history, such material can be more revealing than ceremonial documents. It shows how senior officers’ official expenses and representational responsibilities were handled through Himmler’s immediate office.
Date and Administrative Markings
Earlier accompanying information described the letter as dated 16 August 1938.
Closer examination of the physical document indicates that the formal date beside:
Berlin, den
is actually:
11.8.38
or 11 August 1938.
Beneath it appears an additional handwritten administrative date apparently reading 16.8.38, while the lower SS-Hauptamt reception stamp records:
18 AUG. 1938
This sequence makes sense as an internal administrative route:
11 August — document issued
16 August — subsequent notation/processing
18 August — SS-Hauptamt receipt
For accurate cataloguing, the primary date should therefore be 11 August 1938.
Karl Wolff Original Signature
The signature is one of the strongest visual features of the piece.
Wolff signed prominently in dark ink directly above the typed designation:
SS-Gruppenführer
The signature is clearly handwritten rather than facsimile or mechanically reproduced.
This makes DOC177 an original Karl Wolff autograph document.
Comparable original Wolff letters from the Reichsführer-SS office have been sold by established militaria and autograph auction houses. Ratisbon’s specifically described a July 1938 Wolff letter as bearing his original ink signature, while Hermann Historica catalogued a 1939 example in the same manner.
Collector Interest
From a collector’s perspective, several elements combine particularly well:
- original Karl Wolff handwritten signature;
- official Personal Staff Reichsführer-SS origin;
- prewar date;
- named senior SS recipient;
- Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger association;
- reference to Heinrich Himmler;
- internal financial content;
- SS-Hauptamt receiving stamp;
- multiple contemporary file and routing annotations;
- complete document rather than clipped autograph.
The document therefore crosses several collecting areas: historical autographs, German administrative papers, SS documentation, senior officer correspondence and institutional history.
Its strongest attribute is not simply that Karl Wolff signed it, but that his autograph remains attached to an authentic piece of official correspondence produced while he served as Chief of Himmler’s Personal Staff.
Historical Context
Although often marketed broadly as “WWII SS material,” the date should be respected.
DOC177 was issued in August 1938, more than a year before Germany invaded Poland and the Second World War began in Europe.
It is therefore better described as a prewar German SS document.
This was nevertheless a period during which Heinrich Himmler and the SS were already consolidating substantial control over Germany’s policing and security apparatus. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum describes the progressive centralisation of police authority under Himmler during the 1930s and the growing integration of SS and police structures before the war.
The later roles of both Wolff and Krüger make their surviving correspondence historically significant, but the document should remain described according to what it actually records: a 1938 administrative allowance.
Condition and Authenticity
The document shows age and administrative handling consistent with an original office paper from 1938.
Visible condition includes:
- natural paper toning;
- light creasing and handling;
- two punched filing holes on the left side;
- minor surface marks;
- contemporary handwritten file notations;
- purple SS-Hauptamt receiving stamp;
- minor marks around the lower administrative area.
The typed text remains highly legible.
Karl Wolff’s ink signature remains bold and clearly visible.
The document is offered as an original period typed letter bearing an original handwritten Karl Wolff signature.
The photographs show the actual article offered and form part of the condition description.
