Description

Original WWII German Heer Visor Cap Eagle

Original WWII German Heer visor cap eagle, a period metal insignia designed for wear on the front of the German Army Schirmmütze or visor cap.

The piece depicts the characteristic German national eagle with horizontally extended wings positioned above a circular wreath containing the swastika. The obverse retains clearly visible feather detailing across the wings and body, while the reverse displays the hollow or pressed construction typical of this category of metal headgear insignia.

Specialist references identify this form as a Wehrmacht Heer Schirmmützenadler. Surviving period examples were manufactured in materials including aluminium and fine zinc and were attached directly through the fabric of the visor cap by means of rear prongs.

Heer Visor Cap Insignia

The visor cap formed part of the standard dress and service headgear used by personnel of the German Army.

Metal national eagles of this type were positioned prominently on the front of the cap and formed part of the standard insignia arrangement. Complete period visor caps preserved by specialist dealers still retain aluminium or zinc examples in this position.

The present piece is a loose original insignia and therefore represents a surviving component of that uniform system.

Construction

The eagle is made from a lightweight silver-grey metal, visually consistent with the aluminium examples documented in specialist collections.

The front shows:

  • spread horizontal wings;
  • detailed feathering;
  • central eagle body;
  • circular oak-style wreath;
  • swastika emblem.

The reverse shows the negative impression of the front design together with two surviving attachment prongs positioned towards the wings.

Comparable complete aluminium examples normally retain three mounting prongs.

The absence of a third central attachment is therefore noted as part of the condition rather than concealed.

No clearly legible maker or date marking can be seen in the supplied photographs.

Collector’s Interest

Original loose cap insignia remain popular because they allow collectors to study the construction and fastening systems that are often hidden when still attached to a complete cap.

This example is particularly suitable for collections focused on:

  • Wehrmacht Heer uniforms;
  • German Army headgear;
  • WWII German insignia;
  • visor cap components;
  • military uniform accessories;
  • original German militaria.

The overall design remains clear and attractive despite the loss of one attachment prong.

It should not be described as an SS eagle, political-leader eagle or Luftwaffe eagle. Its proportions and design correspond to the standard Heer visor cap eagle documented by specialist militaria dealers.

CONDITION

Original used condition.

The obverse displays age-related darkening, oxidation and loss of the original bright silver finish. Feather and wreath details remain clearly visible.

The reverse has darker oxidation and natural patina.

Two attachment prongs remain present. A complete comparable example normally carries three, so one attachment appears to be missing.

No restoration or cleaning is claimed.

The photographs form an integral part of the condition description.

AUTHENTICITY / ATTRIBUTION

The form, dimensions, pressed metal construction and rear attachment arrangement are consistent with documented original Wehrmacht Heer visor cap eagles.

No manufacturer attribution is made because no legible maker mark can be confirmed from the photographs.

What is this German eagle insignia?

It is a Wehrmacht Heer visor cap eagle, or Schirmmützenadler, designed for attachment to a German Army visor cap.

Is it an SS eagle?

No. The design corresponds to documented Heer visor-cap eagles rather than Waffen-SS cap eagles.

What material is it?

It appears to be lightweight aluminium or a similar light alloy. Aluminium versions of this exact Heer insignia are well documented.

Is the fastening complete?

Two attachment prongs survive. Comparable complete examples usually have three, so one appears to be missing.

Is there a maker mark?

No maker mark can be confidently identified in the supplied photographs.
