Description
Emperor Hirohito Signed: Overview
An original Japanese imperial diplomatic document dated Tokyo, 23 January 1957, formally recognising LaVerne Baldwin as Consul-General of the United States. It is signed by Emperor Hirohito at the upper left, above the imperial seal, and by Prime Minister Tanzan Ishibashi and Foreign Minister Nobusuke Kishi. Three signatures of this level make it a substantial state document rather than a simple autograph.
Historical Context
Hirohito reigned through Japan’s military expansion and the Pacific War and remained emperor through the constitutional transformation of post-war Japan. This document belongs to the later phase, little more than a decade after 1945, when Japan was rebuilding formal relations with the United States. Baldwin had been appointed by President Eisenhower in September 1956; this letter records his recognition by the Japanese government.
