Description

Der Schulungsbrief 1937 – Original July Issue

This Der Schulungsbrief 1937 is an original period copy of the July 1937 issue, identified on the cover as IV. Jahrgang, 7. Folge, Berlin, July 1937. The main theme printed prominently on the front is Anti-Liberalismus des 19. Jahrhunderts.

Der Schulungsbrief was a German political and ideological training periodical associated with the NSDAP’s educational apparatus and the Deutsche Arbeitsfront. Library catalogues identify the publication as a periodical devoted to National Socialist ideological instruction, published in Berlin from 1934 onwards.

This particular copy is especially straightforward to identify because the complete July 1937 issue has been preserved and digitised by the Universitätsbibliothek Freiburg from the collection of the Augustinermuseum Freiburg. The institutional copy is catalogued exactly as IV. Jahrgang, Folge 7, Juli 1937.

From a collector’s point of view, its interest lies in being an intact contemporary printed source rather than a later reproduction or historical reprint.

Contents of Der Schulungsbrief – July 1937

The issue deals primarily with nineteenth-century political, cultural and intellectual history interpreted through the ideological framework of the National Socialist period.

The surviving table of contents for this exact issue lists, among others:

Werner Klaus – Immanuel Kant: Ein Freiheitsheld des Geistes

Karl Richard Ganzer – Führertum im 19. Jahrhundert

Houston Stewart Chamberlain – Das 19. Jahrhundert

H. Langenbucher – Völkische Dichterkräfte im 19. Jahrhundert

Karl Springenschmid – Italien, die “Insel” im Mittelmeer

Theodor Lüddecke – Totale Auffassung der Wirtschaftskrise

as well as additional political and cultural sections.

Several of these headings can be seen directly in the photographs of the present copy. One illustrated section includes maps discussing Italy and Mediterranean geopolitics, while another reproduces the article “Führertum des 19. Jahrhunderts” by Dr. Karl Richard Ganzer.

The issue therefore provides useful source material for researchers or collectors interested in the way nineteenth-century philosophy, political history, economics and nationalism were reinterpreted for ideological education during the Third Reich.

Historical Context

Der Schulungsbrief was not simply a conventional commercial magazine. Contemporary institutional catalogues identify it as “das zentrale Monatsblatt der NSDAP u. DAF”, or the central monthly publication associated with the NSDAP and German Labour Front training structure. The University of Freiburg maintains a substantial digitised archive of the publication specifically for historical research.

The publication appeared throughout much of the National Socialist period and combined historical essays, political interpretation, cultural commentary, maps and ideological instruction.

This July 1937 number is useful precisely because its subject is fairly focused: nineteenth-century intellectual and political developments are presented through a strongly anti-liberal and nationalist ideological framework.

For modern collectors, that makes the magazine relevant not merely as a piece of German printed ephemera, but as an example of the educational and political communication material circulated within National Socialist Germany before the Second World War.

Collector Interest

What makes this Der Schulungsbrief 1937 issue interesting is the combination of its identifiable date, thematic cover, institutional origin and surviving contents.

The cover is visually strong, retaining the original eagle and swastika design together with the Gothic-style Der Schulungsbrief masthead and the title:

Anti-Liberalismus des 19. Jahrhunderts

It may be of interest to collectors of:

German historical documents, original Third Reich publications, political ephemera, pre-war German periodicals, NSDAP material, ideological publications, historical propaganda and twentieth-century European history.

The exact issue is also documented in a major German university digital collection, which gives collectors a useful institutional reference for comparison.

Condition

Original period softcover publication showing normal age and handling.

Visible characteristics include general toning of the paper, minor edge and corner wear, small imperfections to the cover and a small loss/chip near the right edge. The binding appears intact in the supplied photographs and the interior pages remain generally clean and clearly legible.

A handwritten annotation is visible on one of the later pages.

The condition should ultimately be assessed from the photographs, which form part of the description.

No restoration is claimed.
