Description
Bromberg 1944 Reich Kennkarte: Overview
A civilian identity card issued in Bromberg on 25 November 1944 and valid until 20 November 1949, with the red diagonal band on the cover. It keeps the portrait photograph of the female holder, fingerprints, handwritten personal details, signature fields and official stamps. Inside, a red notation reads “Schutzangehörige (Eingegliederte Ostgebiete)”.
Historical Context
Bromberg (Bydgoszcz) lay in the Polish territories annexed to the Reich in 1939, the “eingegliederte Ostgebiete”. The status recorded on this card classified the holder within the occupation’s system of population categories. It is a document of civilian life under occupation, recording identity, photography and fingerprinting rather than military or political activity. As handwritten names are hard to transcribe reliably from photographs, it is catalogued by place and date of issue.
