Description

Baldur von Schirach 1935 Cut Signature

This Baldur von Schirach 1935 cut signature is a period autograph fragment handwritten in dark ink on a small rectangular piece of aged paper.

The autograph reads:

“v. Schirach”

and is accompanied by the handwritten date:

“1935”

The signed fragment has been mounted on a black backing card and placed inside a modern transparent acrylic display. A separate black-and-white printed portrait has been positioned beside the autograph to provide historical identification and create an attractive presentation.

The portrait is not signed and is not part of the original document from which the autograph was removed. The item must therefore be described accurately as a cut signature with a reference portrait, rather than as a signed photograph, signed military portrait or complete signed document.

Handwritten Signature and Date

The signature occupies most of the available paper and remains clearly visible.

Its principal visual features include:

  • A short handwritten abbreviation for “von”.
  • A tall opening movement at the beginning of the surname.
  • A compact sequence of connected central letters.
  • A rounded and rapidly executed body.
  • A rising final formation.
  • Dark ink with slight variations in intensity.
  • The date 1935 written above the surname.

The handwriting is visually comparable with published examples of Baldur von Schirach’s signature. A public signature reference preserves the characteristic abbreviated “v. Schirach” form, while specialist auction catalogues have offered other Third Reich-period signatures cut from larger pages.

One especially relevant auction comparison was a cut black-ink signature also bearing a handwritten 1935 date. That piece was estimated at $60–$80 in 2023. The auction catalogue described it as a genuine period signature cut from a page, although its final selling price was not publicly displayed.

Because the original letter, album page or document has not survived with the present fragment, the precise circumstances under which it was signed are unknown. The responsible cataloguing formula is therefore “period cut signature attributed to Baldur von Schirach.”

A Pre-WWII Autograph

The handwritten date places the autograph in 1935, four years before the beginning of the Second World War in Europe.

At that time, Schirach was closely associated with the organisation and ideological direction of German youth. He later became Reich Governor and Nazi Party Gauleiter of Vienna from 1940 to 1945.

The date gives the fragment additional historical interest because it belongs to the early consolidation period of the regime rather than to Schirach’s later administration in wartime Vienna.

Baldur von Schirach and the Hitler Youth

Baldur von Schirach was one of the principal organisers of the Hitler Youth and played a central role in directing German youth organisations toward National Socialist ideology.

His leadership was connected with political indoctrination, compulsory youth organisation and the increasing militarisation of German children and adolescents during the 1930s.

Schirach later served as Reich Governor and Gauleiter of Vienna. In that position, his responsibilities included the deportation of Jews from Vienna to ghettos and camps in occupied Poland.

This autograph therefore relates to a historically significant and deeply documented figure whose career connects youth indoctrination, political administration, wartime occupation and the persecution of Vienna’s Jewish population.

Nuremberg Trial and Conviction

After the war, Schirach was prosecuted before the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg.

He was found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to twenty years in prison. He completed his sentence and was released in 1966.

Complete documents signed during the Nuremberg proceedings can command substantially higher prices because they preserve detailed historical content and direct trial context. A 1946 defence document signed by Schirach sold for $6,250, illustrating the major difference between a historically important complete document and a detached autograph fragment.

Cut Signature Format

A cut signature is an autograph removed from a larger letter, document, card or album page.

This format was common among earlier autograph collectors, who frequently preserved the handwritten name while discarding or separating the surrounding text.

The advantage is that the autograph can be displayed clearly and compactly. The disadvantage is the loss of:

  • The original recipient.
  • The full date and location.
  • The subject of the document.
  • Official headings or stamps.
  • Documentary provenance.
  • Historical context surrounding the signature.

The handwritten year 1935 partially compensates for that loss by giving the fragment a clear period of origin.

Display and Reference Portrait

The signed paper has been mounted onto a black rectangular backing, providing contrast and additional physical support.

The autograph and portrait are protected within a modern clear acrylic holder secured at the four corners. The holder is a later conservation and presentation element and should not be confused with part of the original historical item.

The accompanying portrait is a separate printed reproduction. It is included solely for identification and display and does not carry an autograph.

Condition

The signed paper displays natural age toning, small surface marks, scattered spotting and light handling wear.

The lower edge shows a narrow blue-grey border or mounting trace. Minor creasing and surface irregularities are visible, but no major tear appears to cross the handwritten surname.

The dark signature remains complete and legible. The handwritten date is visible above the autograph, although the ink density varies slightly.

The black backing card shows small marks and minor edge wear.

The printed reference portrait presents visible reproduction texture and light handling traces. The acrylic holder displays reflections, scratches and ordinary signs of use.

All supplied photographs form an essential part of the condition description.
