Description

Italian-German Africa Campaign Medal: Overview

An original Italian-German Africa Campaign Medal from the Second World War, preserved with its period ribbon. It is one of the most recognisable campaign medals of the North African theatre, where Italian and German forces fought together between 1941 and 1943.

Historical Context

Known in Italian as the Medaglia commemorativa della campagna italo-tedesca in Africa and in German as the Medaille für den italienisch-deutschen Feldzug in Afrika, the medal commemorates the joint Axis campaign in North Africa. It is closely connected with the Afrika Korps, the Italian Army in Libya and Egypt, and the desert war against British and Allied forces.

The obverse shows the Arco dei Fileni, a monument on the coastal road between Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, used at the time as a symbol of the Italian presence in Libya, with a bilingual inscription around the edge. The reverse shows two stylised figures restraining a crocodile, an allegorical image commonly interpreted as a propaganda reference to the British enemy in Africa.
