Hirohito reigned as Emperor of Japan from 1926 to 1989, through the war and Japan’s transformation afterwards. Imperial documents are usually authenticated by seals rather than signatures, which makes “signed by Hirohito” claims especially demanding.

Who Was Hirohito?

Hirohito was born in Tokyo in 1901 and became Emperor in 1926. After the war he repudiated the quasi-divine status of the emperor and helped turn Japan into a constitutional monarchy. He died in Tokyo on 7 January 1989.

What Documents Bear Hirohito’s Signature?

Imperial documents such as appointments and rescripts carry the imperial seal and, in some cases, the emperor’s name in a formal form. Personal signatures are rare. See original signature or facsimile.

What Should Collectors Watch For?

  • Japanese imperial documents rely on seals; understand the document type.
  • Personal “signatures” need exceptional evidence.
  • Seek expert advice on Japanese-language documents.

Historical Context

Japan waged wars of aggression in Asia and the Pacific during his reign. Historians continue to debate the emperor’s personal responsibility.

Collector’s Note

With Japanese imperial documents I rely on specialists in Japanese diplomatic and seal practice as well as on my own examination.
