Josef “Sepp” Dietrich led Hitler’s SS bodyguard unit, which grew into the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler and later a Panzer corps. He commanded the 6th Panzer Army in the Ardennes offensive. Signed photographs of Dietrich, sometimes alongside Hitler, are popular with collectors and need careful examination.
Who Was Sepp Dietrich?
Dietrich was born in Hawangen in 1892. In 1932 he founded the SS unit that became the Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, which he commanded and which took part in the purge of the SA leadership in June 1934. The Leibstandarte was expanded into the I SS Panzer Corps in 1943, which fought in Normandy in 1944. In October 1944 he took command of the 6th Panzer Army, which spearheaded the Ardennes offensive.
What Documents Bear Dietrich’s Signature?
His signature appears on Leibstandarte and Waffen-SS documents, award papers and signed photographs. Photographs signed by Dietrich showing Hitler are a known collecting category and must be examined with particular care. See original signature or facsimile.
What Should Collectors Watch For?
- Unit designations change from 1933 to 1944: check them against the date.
- Signed photographs need comparison with authenticated exemplars.
- Post-war signatures should be described as such.
Responsibility and Fate
After the war Dietrich was held partly responsible for the murder of American prisoners at Malmédy and sentenced in 1946 to 25 years; he was released after ten. In 1957 a German court convicted him for his part in the 1934 killings, and he served a further 20 months. He died in 1966.
Collector’s Note
A signed Dietrich photograph is a classic Waffen-SS collectable. I check the photograph itself, its print and paper, as carefully as the ink on it.
