Description

German Badge & Tinnie Lot: Overview

Five pieces spanning about ten years, from the late Weimar Republic to the pre-war Third Reich: a sporting souvenir of 1928 followed by labour and commemorative badges of 1935 and 1938. The chronology is what makes the group interesting.

What the Lot Contains

  • 14. Deutsches Turnfest, Köln 1928: long textile souvenir inscribed “14. Deutsches Turnfest 1928” and “Köln a. Rh.” with a view of Cologne; decorative borders, metal suspension fitting and tassel. The 14th German Gymnastics Festival was held in Cologne in July 1928 and was a major sporting event of the Weimar Republic.
  • Tag der Arbeit 1935: oval badge with workers beneath the inscription and the date 1935.
  • 1. Mai 1938: May Day 1938 badge; the reverse keeps its pin and maker information, visible in the photographs.
  • Two further insignia: a small darkened eagle-form badge with a circular lower element, and a larger gold-tone wreath badge with a coloured centre. Their attribution cannot be established from the photographs, so none is given.

Condition

Used historical condition with age, patina, oxidation, scratches and wear. The 1928 textile has pronounced edge wear and fraying but keeps its main decoration, hardware and tassel. The photographs show the actual pieces and form part of the description.
