Description
Fritz Darges Autograph – Original Handwritten Signature
This Fritz Darges autograph is an original handwritten signature preserved on a clipped paper fragment and mounted within a black border on an older card or album section. It is accompanied by a small black-and-white portrait image identifying the historical subject.
The autograph itself is the principal collectible element. The signature is executed in dark ink and remains large, clearly visible and well defined. The irregularly shaped brown backing shows considerable age and handling, giving a good indication of the way in which the autograph was previously stored or presented.
From a collector’s point of view, the appeal lies in the combination of the original signature, older mounting and identification portrait rather than in an elaborate signed document.
Authenticity of the handwritten Fritz Darges autograph is guaranteed by Autographs & Militaria.
Who was Fritz Darges?
Fritz Darges was born in 1913 and became an SS officer during the National Socialist period. He reached the rank of SS-Obersturmbannführer and occupied positions that placed him close to senior figures within the regime.
He served in the staff environment of Martin Bormann and later became one of Adolf Hitler’s personal SS adjutants. Material preserved by the Institut für Zeitgeschichte includes an interview with Darges dealing with his time on Bormann’s staff, his personal contacts and events surrounding 20 July 1944. Contemporary historical research from the same institute specifically identifies him as Hitler’s personal adjutant, SS-Obersturmbannführer Fritz Darges.
His period in Hitler’s immediate entourage ended in July 1944. Historical research records differing accounts concerning the precise incident, involving Darges’ behaviour during a military conference and an insect that irritated Hitler. What is established is that Darges was removed from headquarters shortly afterward and transferred back to a Panzer regiment.
Darges subsequently returned to frontline service with the 5th SS Panzer Division “Wiking” and commanded SS-Panzer-Regiment 5 during the final phase of the war. He later received the Knight’s Cross for combat actions in Hungary during early 1945.
These associations explain why a Fritz Darges autograph appeals to collectors interested in personalities connected with the German command structure, Hitler’s headquarters, the Waffen-SS and the closing years of the Second World War.
An autograph rather than a signed document
An important distinction should be made when describing this piece.
This is a clipped autograph, not a complete letter, military document or signed photograph. The surviving fragment contains the handwritten signature but no visible date or accompanying text establishing when or why it was signed.
For that reason, although Darges is principally collected as a WWII personality, I do not describe the autograph itself as having been signed during WWII. Darges survived until 2009, and both wartime and post-war examples of his signature circulate on the collectors’ market.
That distinction is important for transparency and makes the listing stronger rather than weaker.
The small portrait displayed alongside the autograph should likewise be regarded as an identification/reference photograph unless separate provenance establishes it as an original period photograph.
Collector interest
A Fritz Darges autograph has several different areas of collecting relevance.
Collectors of Hitler-associated personalities know Darges because of his position within Hitler’s personal staff. Collectors of Waffen-SS material may instead associate him with his later command of SS-Panzer-Regiment 5 “Wiking”. Autograph collectors may simply prefer a clean standalone signature that can be displayed without acquiring a considerably more expensive full document.
The signature here has good visual presence. It occupies most of the surviving paper section and has long, characteristic strokes that make it suitable for display.
Its existing older mounting also gives the piece the appearance of having once formed part of an autograph or historical collection.
Condition
The signed paper fragment shows age, light surface marks and minor spotting.
It is mounted onto black card, which is itself attached to an irregularly cut or torn brown backing. The backing has substantial edge loss and a small circular hole or damaged area toward the right-hand side.
The signature remains strong and clearly legible.
The accompanying portrait image has not been represented here as an original wartime photographic print.
Please use the photographs as the principal reference for the exact condition, dimensions, mounting and appearance.
Authenticity
Original handwritten Fritz Darges autograph. Authenticity guaranteed by Autographs & Militaria.
The guarantee applies to the autograph. No unsupported claim is made regarding the exact date on which the signature was written.
