Description

Original Erwin Rommel Signed Document from 1936

This Erwin Rommel signed document is an original German military certificate issued by the Kriegsschule Potsdam, or Potsdam War School, on 1 April 1936.

The rectangular certificate is produced on off-white paper and contains a combination of typed text, handwritten information, administrative annotations, an institutional stamp and a large handwritten signature in graphite pencil:

“Rommel”

At the time this document was signed, Erwin Rommel had not yet achieved the international fame that would later surround his service during the Second World War. He was serving as a military instructor and course leader at the Potsdam Infantry School, a position he had received in 1935.

This makes the document particularly interesting as an early autograph from Rommel’s pre-WWII career.

Potsdam War School Certificate

The document is headed:

“Kriegsschule Potsdam”

and dated:

“Potsdam, den 1.4.1936”

The centred title reads:

“Bescheinigung”

which translates as:

“Certificate”

The typed and handwritten German text states:

“Der Major Dr. Dr. Mayer hat den Nachweis seiner arischen Abstammung bis zu den Großeltern erbracht.”

English translation:

“Major Dr. Dr. Mayer has provided proof of his Aryan ancestry extending to the generation of his grandparents.”

The document therefore records an administrative racial-certification procedure imposed within German institutions during the National Socialist period.

Its historical importance lies not only in Rommel’s signature but also in the way it documents the racial bureaucracy operating within German military and public life during the 1930s.

Personally Signed by Erwin Rommel

Rommel’s surname appears prominently in graphite pencil beneath the main text. The signature is large, fluid and immediately visible, occupying much of the lower-right section of the certificate.

Unlike a detached autograph, modern reproduction or printed signature, the document preserves a complete administrative context:

  • Official Potsdam War School heading
  • Precise date
  • Identified recipient
  • Historical certification text
  • Institutional stamp
  • Contemporary annotations
  • Handwritten Rommel signature

A matching specialist catalogue describes the signature as handwritten in graphite pencil and records the document as measuring approximately 210 × 110 millimetres.

Erwin Rommel at Potsdam

Rommel became a course leader at the Potsdam Infantry School in 1935. His reputation as an instructor formed an important part of his interwar military career.

The following year, he was appointed to duties connected with Hitler’s military escort. In 1937, his tactical study Infanterie greift anInfantry Attacks—was published and became widely read within German military circles.

The date of this certificate therefore places it at an important transitional moment: after Rommel’s appointment in Potsdam but before his rapid rise into the senior military command positions for which he became internationally known.

Connection with the Second World War

During the invasion of France in 1940, Rommel commanded the 7th Panzer Division, whose rapid movements earned it the nickname “Ghost Division.”

In February 1941, he was appointed commander of German forces in North Africa. His early successes with the Afrika Korps earned him the well-known nickname “The Desert Fox.” He was promoted to field marshal following the capture of Tobruk in June 1942.

After the Axis defeat in North Africa, Rommel returned to Europe and later supervised German defensive preparations along the Atlantic coast and in Normandy.

His political position and relationship with the National Socialist regime remain subjects of historical debate. In October 1944, after being accused of connections with the conspiracy against Hitler, Rommel was forced to choose between suicide and prosecution. He died on 14 October 1944.

Historical and Collecting Significance

This Erwin Rommel signed document combines several collecting fields:

  • Original military autographs
  • Erwin Rommel memorabilia
  • German military academies
  • Pre-WWII Wehrmacht documentation
  • Potsdam military history
  • Third Reich administrative documents
  • Afrika Korps personalities
  • Second World War commanders
  • Original German paper ephemera

The racial-certification content also makes it an important documentary object for studying the discriminatory administrative system introduced during the National Socialist period.

It should be viewed as historical evidence of that system rather than as a commemorative or ideological object.

Condition

The document presents general age toning, scattered marks and light surface wear.

Several filing perforations are visible near the margins. The upper-left area displays a small tear beside one of the holes, while the upper-right section contains contemporary red and blue administrative annotations.

The typed text remains legible. The institutional stamp is lightly impressed but visible, and the graphite Rommel signature remains large and clearly distinguishable.

The reverse shows light traces of writing, transferred markings and further age-related wear. All photographs form an essential part of the condition description.

The document is offered strictly as a historical collectable for preservation, education, documentation and research. Its sale does not endorse the racial policies or ideology represented by its administrative content.
