Description

Winston Churchill Board of Trade Signed Letter: Overview

A one-page typed letter signed by Winston S. Churchill as President of the Board of Trade (1908–1910), on Board of Trade, Whitehall Gardens stationery, with handwritten salutation and closing. It is addressed to Sir Stanley Mordaunt Leathes, thanking him for chairing a Selection Committee with tact and ability, which allowed Churchill to proceed to final appointments, and for undertaking the examination of applications made by women.

Historical Context

The Board of Trade was Churchill’s first Cabinet post. Leathes, historian and civil servant, became First Civil Service Commissioner in 1910. The reference to women applicants reflects the changing place of women in public employment in Edwardian Britain.
