Description
This original Völkischer Beobachter 1941 newspaper is a historically significant IIWW paper collectible connected to the German wartime press of the Second World War. The issue shown is the Berliner Ausgabe, dated Saturday, 18 October 1941, and identified as issue number 291 of the 54th year. Its main front-page headline refers to Odessa and the chaos of the Soviet withdrawal, presenting the type of heavily propagandistic wartime reporting that characterised the official press environment of the Third Reich.
The Völkischer Beobachter was one of the most recognisable newspapers of the National Socialist period, and surviving original issues are collected today not for ideological reasons, but as primary-source documents. Newspapers such as this allow historians, researchers and collectors to study how military campaigns, political events, social control, cultural messaging and public opinion were framed for the German population during the Second World War. This Völkischer Beobachter 1941 issue is especially interesting because it relates to the Eastern Front and the Black Sea region at a moment when Odessa was a major subject of wartime reporting.
The front page includes the large headline “Wie Odessa von den Bolschewiken im Chaos verlassen wurde”, accompanied by a map showing the wider operational area around the Soviet front, including Moscow, Kalinin, Tula, Kiev and Odessa. The article presents a German propaganda version of events surrounding the capture and evacuation of Odessa. For collectors of IIWW newspapers, Eastern Front documentation and German wartime press material, this type of front-page layout is visually strong and historically relevant.
Inside the issue, the newspaper contains multiple wartime and political articles, including references to Odessa, Soviet forces, the Black Sea, the Eastern Front, and broader international developments. One section visible in the photographs refers to “Bomben auf die Fluchtschiffe der Sowjets im Seegebiet vor Odessa”, while another page includes photographic material from the front with captions describing Soviet prisoners, artillery, damaged equipment and wartime scenes. These images are valuable from a collecting perspective because they show how photographs were selected and arranged to support the newspaper’s official narrative.
The issue also contains wider political and cultural material from October 1941. Among the visible articles are references to General Tojo and the formation of a cabinet in Japan, reports on Prague and the “Rudolphinum”, articles connected to Rome, London, Soviet military leadership and European cultural subjects. The newspaper includes theatre listings, classified advertisements, commercial advertising, obituaries and everyday public notices, which help place the military content within the broader civilian context of wartime Berlin. These secondary pages are often just as interesting as the front page because they show daily life, entertainment, commerce, employment and social information during the IIWW period.
Condition is consistent with an original wartime newspaper of this age. The paper shows natural toning, fold lines, handling marks, small edge wear and age-related fragility. These features are typical for German newspapers from the early 1940s, which were printed on wartime paper stock that was never intended to survive for decades. The photographs show the item with several interior pages, printed text, period advertisements and illustrated sections. Please review the images carefully, as they form part of the description and show the exact item offered.
This Völkischer Beobachter 1941 newspaper is suitable for collectors of original IIWW paper items, German historical documents, wartime newspapers, Eastern Front material, propaganda studies, military history archives and researchers interested in how events such as Odessa were represented in the German press. It is also relevant for collectors who focus on newspapers with strong front-page headlines, maps and photographic wartime content.
The item is offered strictly as a historical collectible and documentary source. It is not sold to promote, support or normalise any ideology, political movement or extremist symbolism. Any symbols, terminology or political references present on the newspaper are part of the original historical document and are described only for accuracy, research and collector transparency.
