Description
Richard Anton Christ Medal Group
Original historical document and medal estate belonging to Richard Anton Christ, a German postal and telecommunications official from the Mainz / Rhein-Hessen area who later served as a Sonderführer (Z) during the Second World War.
This is not a single document, but a complete personal archive. The group includes Christ’s Soldbuch with portrait photograph, documents connected with his civil career at the Telegraphenbauamt Mainz / Fernmeldebauamt Mainz, family and ancestry papers, identity documents, certificates, correspondence, and a group of medals associated with his service and awards.
The archive records a long personal timeline. Richard Christ was connected with the German postal and telegraph service, had First World War service with Infanterie-Regiment 113, with references to Galicia, France and Verdun, and later appears in Second World War documentation as Sonderführer (Z). The visible and documented units include Nachrichten-Ersatz-Abteilung 3 and an Einsatzgruppe für Fernmelde-Sonderpersonal, reflecting his specialist communications background.
One of the strongest pieces in the group is the award document for the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords, issued to Sonderführer (Z) Richard Christ on 30 January 1945 by the Commander-in-Chief of the 15th Army. The certificate is described as bearing the original signature of General Gustav-Adolf von Zangen, who held Oak Leaves to the Knight’s Cross. At that time, the 15th Army was involved in the fighting and retreat connected with the Ruhr area.
The medals and decorations included with the estate are described as including the Iron Cross 2nd Class 1914, Front-Line Combatant’s Cross / Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer, Hessian Bravery Medal, Faithful Service Decoration / Treudienstehrenzeichen, and War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords. Additional visible badges or medal items should be assessed directly from the photographs and in-hand inspection.
Also included are civil and family documents such as the Gesellenbrief from the Handwerkskammer Darmstadt, ancestry records, baptismal and marriage-related documents, postal service identity papers, a 1940 metal donation certificate with facsimile Göring signature, post-war identification documents and other personal paperwork. This gives the estate a wider biographical value, not only a military one.
From a collector’s point of view, the appeal lies in the fact that the archive remains together. It connects one named man through civil training, First World War service, interwar professional life, Second World War specialist service, award documents, medals and post-war identity papers. That makes it far stronger than a loose Soldbuch or an isolated medal.
The condition varies across the group. The documents show age, folds, toning, stains, handwriting, official stamps, edge wear and handling marks. The Soldbuch and papers have clear period use. The medals should be assessed from the photographs and, where necessary, by in-hand inspection. The photographs form an essential part of the description.
Offered strictly as a historical document and medal estate for collecting, research and preservation.

Richard Anton Christ Medal Group: Historical Context
This archive is especially interesting because Richard Anton Christ’s documents cross several periods of German history. His early craft and identity papers date from the pre-war and First World War era, while the later material connects him with the German postal and communications services.
During the Second World War, Sonderführer personnel were often specialists used for technical, administrative, linguistic or professional tasks where their civilian expertise was needed within a military structure. In Christ’s case, the telecommunications and postal background gives context to his later assignment in communications-related service.
The award document dated 30 January 1945 places part of the archive in the final phase of the war and links the group to the 15th Army and General Gustav-Adolf von Zangen. This gives the group stronger historical weight than a standard civil document archive.

Condition and Authenticity Note
The archive shows visible age and use. There are folds, stains, toning, handling marks, edge wear, official stamps and handwritten entries throughout the paperwork. The Soldbuch retains its photograph and internal entries.
The medals are included as shown. Their originality and matching relationship to the paperwork should be assessed carefully from the photographs and by in-hand review. The award and service documents appear consistent with original period paperwork, but formal third-party authentication is recommended for buyers who require a certificate.
The signature attribution to General Gustav-Adolf von Zangen is based on the visible document and the auction description of the same estate.
