Description
Mutterkreuz: Overview
A Mother’s Cross in Gold, the highest of the three grades of the Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter. It has the classic cross form with blue and white enamel, a central circular emblem and a gold-toned sunburst behind, and the reverse carries the inscription of the award with the date 16 December 1938. Offered as a single medal.
Historical Context
The Mother’s Cross was instituted on 16 December 1938 as part of the regime’s family and population policy and was awarded in bronze, silver and gold; the gold grade was for mothers of eight or more children. As a civil award rather than a combat decoration, it documents home-front history, social policy and the role assigned to women under the regime.
