Description
German Mother’s Cross Award Document: Overview
An original award certificate for the Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter, Dritte Stufe (Cross of Honour of the German Mother, 3rd Class), issued in Berlin on 21 May 1939 to Babette Koch, née Ott, of Vorbach. The date places it in the first months of presentation of the decoration.
Beneath the printed title “Der Führer und Reichskanzler” is the period facsimile signature of Adolf Hitler. It is part of the printed document and is not offered as a handwritten autograph. A large handwritten countersignature at lower right appears to read “Meissner”; this reading has not been independently authenticated and is given with caution.
Historical Context
The Mother’s Cross was instituted in December 1938 and awarded in three grades according to the number of children. The 3rd Class, associated with the bronze grade, was the first level. Award certificates are more informative than the decoration alone, because they record the recipient, place and exact date.
