Julius Streicher published Der Stürmer, the most notorious antisemitic paper of the Nazi era, and ruled the party in Franconia. Material connected with him is pure propaganda of hatred, and it belongs in a collection only as evidence of how that hatred was spread.

Who Was Julius Streicher?

Streicher was born in Fleinhausen in 1885. He founded Der Stürmer in 1923 and was appointed Gauleiter of Middle Franconia, later Franconia. After a 1939 affair involving Hermann Göring, the Supreme Party Court declared him unfit for leadership and stripped him of his party posts, but he continued to publish his paper.

What Documents Bear Streicher’s Signature?

His signature appears on Gau correspondence and documents and on material connected with Der Stürmer. Such items must be described strictly as evidence of propaganda. See original signature or facsimile and period newspapers.

What Should Collectors Watch For?

  • Gau documents must fit the period of his leadership.
  • Printed propaganda is not signed material.
  • Display of such material is restricted in several countries.

Responsibility and Fate

The International Military Tribunal convicted Streicher of crimes against humanity for his incitement to persecution and sentenced him to death. He was hanged on 16 October 1946.

Collector’s Note

I treat Streicher material with particular restraint. Its historical value lies in showing how antisemitic hatred was manufactured, and the description must make that clear.
