Who Was Harry S. Truman?
Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri, in 1884. Sworn in as Vice President on 20 January 1945, he became President on 12 April 1945 and served until 1953. He authorised the atomic bombings of Hiroshima on 6 August and Nagasaki on 9 August 1945.
What Documents Bear Truman’s Signature?
Heads of government and state rarely signed everything that went out in their name. Secretaries, signing machines and printed or stamped signatures were used for routine replies, so a typed letter is not automatically hand-signed. Truman signed letters, commissions and photographs as President and many letters and books in retirement. See original signature or facsimile.
What Should Collectors Watch For?
- Separate presidential and post-presidential signatures.
- Check commissions for countersignatures and dates.
- Be alert to secretarial signatures.
Legacy
Truman’s presidency covered the end of the war, the founding of the United Nations and the beginning of the Cold War. He died in Kansas City in 1972.
Collector’s Note
Truman letters from his retirement are often warm and direct. They are genuine and collectable, but they belong to a different period from his wartime presidency.
