Vasily Chuikov commanded the defence of Stalingrad itself and later spearheaded the Soviet drive on Berlin, where he personally accepted the city’s surrender.

Who Was Vasily Chuikov?

Chuikov was born near Moscow in 1900. He was called to Stalingrad to command the defence of the city in 1942 and later led his forces in the drive to Berlin. On 1 May 1945 he personally accepted the German surrender of Berlin. He later became a marshal.

What Documents Bear Chuikov’s Signature?

His signature appears on command documents, award papers, signed photographs and copies of his memoirs.

Soviet documents bring their own checks. Signatures are usually in Cyrillic, and official papers combine typed text, printed forms, ink signatures and round seals. A collector should read the Russian text, compare the office named with the date, and remember that Soviet state papers were often reproduced, so many documents carry a printed or stamped signature rather than ink.

What Should Collectors Watch For?

  • Read the Cyrillic text and check the office against the date.
  • Distinguish ink signatures from printed or stamped ones.
  • Soviet-era reproductions and later commemorative items are common.
  • Ask for documented provenance on any important piece.

Later Life

Chuikov died in Moscow on 18 March 1982 and was buried at Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, the former Stalingrad.

Collector’s Note

Stalingrad items are highly emotional for collectors on both sides. With Chuikov I check the date carefully, since he signed many items after the war.
