Description

The original signature of Benito Mussolini, large, dark and certified as authentic, together with that of King Vittorio Emanuele III on an Italian royal decree of 1937. Mussolini countersigned as Head of Government and Minister for War beneath the King’s sweeping signature. The decree concerns a general of the Royal Army and preserves unusual contemporary corrections to its rank, dates and place of issue.

The Mussolini signature

Mussolini’s “Mussolini” is written on a very large scale in dark ink, complete and immediately recognisable, in the lower right of the sheet. Above it, the King’s “Vittorio Emanuele” stretches broadly across the page. Beside Mussolini’s signature is a small manuscript annotation dated 6-10-37. Both signatures remain the dominant visual feature of the document.

Authenticity

Both signatures have been examined and certified as authentic by Juan García Nicolás, qualified graphologist and handwriting examiner (perito calígrafo, trained at Ipsigrap) and editor of Autographs & Militaria. The certification rests on a consistent set of features rather than any single indicator: the handwriting characteristics of each signature compared with documented examples, the ink and writing pressure on the paper, and the coherence of the whole document, from its printed royal heading and manuscript text to the contemporary Ministry of War markings.

Why does Mussolini sign beneath the King?

In the Kingdom of Italy, royal decrees were issued in the King’s name and countersigned by the responsible minister. The decree was issued “on the proposal of the Head of Government, Prime Minister Secretary of State and Minister Secretary of State for War”, both offices then held by Mussolini. The printed heading gives the King’s style as Re d’Italia, Imperatore d’Etiopia, dating the document to the period of the Italian empire after 1936.

What does the decree say?

The manuscript operative text places Luca de Luca, “fuori quadro”, in the auxiliary category on grounds of age from 2 September 1937, with the annual allowance of nine thousand lire provided by article 72 of the law of 16 June 1935, no. 1026.

The decree was revised by hand before completion, and the corrections are part of its historical interest:

  • The rank, originally written as colonel of artillery, is struck through and corrected to general.
  • The seniority date is amended to 1937.
  • The place of issue, originally Sant’Anna di Valdieri, is struck through and replaced with San Rossore.
  • The date, originally July 1937, is struck through and replaced with 14 October 1937.

Red administrative lines cross the text, and the reverse bears the stamp of the Ministero della Guerra – Ragioneria Centrale with accounting references and official signatures.

Why collect it?

A certified Mussolini signature on an original state document, paired with the King’s, is the most contextual way to own his autograph. This example adds a senior officer and a decree that visibly records its own administrative history. Further certified examples from 1937: DOC186, DOC187, DOC188 and DOC189.
