Vasily Zaitsev became the most famous sniper of the battle of Stalingrad, and his story inspired books and films. Most Zaitsev signatures collectors meet are post-war.

Who Was Vasily Zaitsev?

Zaitsev was born in 1915 and worked as a hunter in the Urals before joining the navy in 1937. He volunteered for Stalingrad, where his skill as a sniper became legendary and earned him the Gold Star of a Hero of the Soviet Union.

What Documents Bear Zaitsev’s Signature?

Wartime award documents and post-war signed photographs, letters and copies of his memoirs exist. Post-war items are more common and should be described as such. See Hero of the Soviet Union.

Soviet documents bring their own checks. Signatures are usually in Cyrillic, and official papers combine typed text, printed forms, ink signatures and round seals. A collector should read the Russian text, compare the office named with the date, and remember that Soviet state papers were often reproduced, so many documents carry a printed or stamped signature rather than ink.

What Should Collectors Watch For?

  • Read the Cyrillic text and check the office against the date.
  • Distinguish ink signatures from printed or stamped ones.
  • Soviet-era reproductions and later commemorative items are common.
  • Ask for documented provenance on any important piece.

Later Life

Zaitsev died in 1991. His remains were later reburied at Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd.

Collector’s Note

Popular fame attracts forgeries. With Zaitsev, as with any celebrated soldier, I keep the legend apart from the documentary record.
