Description

The WWII German Eastern Front Medal offered here is an original period example of the famous Medaille “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42”, commonly known among collectors as the Ostmedaille or Eastern Front Medal.

Instituted on 26 May 1942, the decoration was created in recognition of service during the German campaign on the Eastern Front through the exceptionally severe winter of 1941–1942. The relevant qualifying period extended from November 1941 into April 1942.

WWII German Eastern Front Medal design

This WWII German Eastern Front Medal displays the characteristic design associated with the award.

The obverse features the German national eagle and period emblem beneath the combined imagery of a military steel helmet and grenade. These elements created an immediately recognisable visual reference to service under wartime conditions on the Eastern Front.

The reverse carries the raised inscription:

WINTERSCHLACHT
IM OSTEN
1941/42

Below the inscription appears the characteristic crossed sword and branch motif.

The surviving ribbon is predominantly red with a narrow central arrangement of white and black stripes. This distinctive ribbon is immediately associated with the Eastern Front medal and provides an important visual component of the decoration.

Period examples were commonly produced in zinc, generally with applied silvered and darkened finishes. Specialist militaria references document multiple manufacturers and maker codes appearing on suspension rings, although no manufacturer number can be confidently identified from the photographs of this particular example.

Condition and period character

This WWII German Eastern Front Medal has a particularly strong untouched period appearance.

The surfaces display substantial darkening, oxidation and age patina consistent with an old zinc decoration. Areas of the original contrasting finish remain visible, especially around the raised elements.

The obverse eagle and accompanying details remain identifiable despite the considerable age-related surface wear.

The reverse inscription “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42” remains clearly legible and is one of the strongest visual features of this particular example.

The medal retains its suspension ring together with a period-style red, white and black ribbon. The ribbon displays age, wear, creasing and minor deterioration consistent with long-term storage and handling.

No attempt appears to have been made to excessively polish the medal, allowing the historical surface and patina to remain visible.

All photographs show the actual piece offered and should be considered an integral part of the condition description.
