WWII German Panzer Danziger Skull Collar Insignia – Single Totenkopf

Description

This WWII German Panzer Danziger Skull Collar Insignia is a single stamped metal Totenkopf produced in the distinctive Prussian “Danziger” skull-and-crossbones pattern associated with German armored formations during the Second World War.

The piece features the characteristic rounded skull with pronounced cranium, open oval eye sockets, triangular nasal opening, clearly defined teeth and stylized crossed bones positioned beneath and to either side of the jaw area.

Its surface retains an aged silver-toned finish with darker areas of oxidation and wear that emphasize the embossed details of the skull.

Historical Background

The skull-and-crossbones motif had a much longer history in German and Prussian military tradition before its association with German armored troops during the Second World War.

The distinctive Danziger Totenkopf design was derived from earlier Prussian military insignia and became particularly recognizable when Germany introduced the black Panzer wrap uniform in November 1934.

With the introduction of the black Panzer uniform, special collar tabs were adopted for armored personnel. These incorporated a metal skull-and-crossbones device based on the older Prussian Danziger pattern.

The insignia was mounted onto the collar patches of the black Panzer wrap tunic and continued to be used throughout the war, with numerous manufacturing variations resulting from different makers, metals and production methods.

The same general skull pattern was also associated with certain field-grey wrap uniforms, including those used by assault artillery personnel.

Waffenfarbe and Panzer Uniforms

German military branches were identified by specific Waffenfarbe, or branch-of-service colors.

For armored personnel, the best-known Waffenfarbe was pink, which appeared as piping around Panzer collar patches and other uniform details.

Other colors could appear among specialized armored formations, including red for armored artillery, golden yellow for reconnaissance formations, lemon yellow for signals personnel and other variations according to branch and period.

The metal Danziger skull therefore became one of the most recognizable details of the German Panzer uniform.

Construction

This individual example is manufactured from stamped alloy with a silver-washed or silver-toned surface.

No attempt has been made to artificially improve or restore the appearance of the piece.
