The WWII German Wound Badge in Black was one of the best-known personal decorations associated with German military service during the Second World War. This collector grouping brings together a full-size black wound badge, a miniature stickpin and a period paper packet bearing the printed designation “Verwundeten-Abzeichen Schwarz.”

The Verwundetenabzeichen, or Wound Badge, had its origins during the First World War and was subsequently reintroduced in the German armed forces during the Second World War. The award existed in three principal grades—Black, Silver and Gold—with the black grade generally representing the first level of the decoration.

This example follows the familiar oval design associated with the Wound Badge in Black, incorporating a military helmet bearing the period emblem above crossed swords, surrounded by an oval wreath. The dark finish remains visible across the badge, while areas of natural wear and age reveal variations in the underlying metal and surface finish. These traces of use and ageing contribute to the historical character collectors expect from surviving period militaria.

An especially interesting component of this grouping is the small matching stickpin. Miniature decorations were intended for wear when the full-size award was inappropriate, allowing the recipient to display an association with the decoration in civilian or less formal circumstances.
