Description

Original Mutterkreuz medal in Gold, the highest class of the Ehrenkreuz der Deutschen Mutter, also known as the German Mother’s Cross in Gold or Mother’s Cross Gold. This is an original historical civil award from the IIWW / WWII period and one of the most recognizable German decorations issued during the late 1930s and early 1940s.

This Mutterkreuz medal features the classic cross-shaped design with blue and white enamel, a central circular emblem and a gold-toned sunburst backing. The reverse displays the traditional inscription associated with the award and the date 16 December 1938. The Gold class was the highest grade of the Mutterkreuz award system and is generally more desirable to collectors than the bronze and silver grades, especially when the enamel, shape, central detail and reverse inscription are clearly preserved.

Although the Mutterkreuz medal was not a military combat award, it remains an important object within the broader collecting field of IIWW German medals and civil decorations. Unlike battlefield decorations such as the Iron Cross or War Merit Cross, the German Mother’s Cross belonged to the civil award system. This gives it a different type of historical value. It is connected to home front history, social policy, official recognition and the administrative culture of wartime Germany.

For collectors, the appeal of a Mutterkreuz Gold medal lies partly in its distinctive design and partly in its historical context. The blue and white enamel work makes the piece visually recognizable, while the reverse inscription and dated design connect it directly to the award system of the period. Many collectors include the Mutterkreuz in collections of German civil awards, women’s history, family-related documents, non-combat medals, home front material and original historical militaria.

This example is offered as a single Mutterkreuz Gold medal. It is suitable for collectors looking for an original German Mother’s Cross medal to complete a display, accompany an award document, or represent the civil award category within a wider IIWW / WWII collection. It can also be of interest to those studying German state awards, social history and the difference between military and civil decorations of the period.

The medal shows age and previous handling consistent with a period item. There is natural patina, light surface wear, small enamel imperfections and signs of storage or use visible in the photographs. These condition details are important for collectors, as they help assess the originality, preservation and overall display quality of the piece. The photographs should be considered part of the description and reviewed carefully before purchase.

The Mutterkreuz Gold medal remains a recognizable and historically relevant collectible because it represents a category of awards that is often overlooked when compared with combat decorations. It is not a medal connected to battlefield action, but it is still part of the material history of Germany during the Second World War period. For that reason, it can sit well in collections focused on civil awards, German historical medals, IIWW documents, home front memorabilia and original period objects.

This Mutterkreuz medal is offered strictly as a historical collectible for study, documentation, preservation and collecting purposes. It is sold as an original period item of historical interest connected to German civil awards of the IIWW / WWII era. No political, ideological or extremist affiliation is expressed or implied.
