Italian-German Africa Campaign Medal with Original Ribbon

Original Italian-German Africa Campaign Medal from the Second World War period, preserved with its original period ribbon. This historic decoration is directly connected with the North African campaign, one of the most recognisable theatres of the IIWW, where German and Italian forces operated together across Libya, Egypt and Tunisia.

The medal is known in Italian as the Medaglia commemorativa della campagna italo-tedesca in Africa and in German as the Medaille für den italienisch-deutschen Feldzug in Afrika. It was created to commemorate the joint Italian-German campaign in Africa and is strongly associated with the history of the Afrika Korps, the Italian colonial forces, Axis operations in the desert, and the wider military struggle against British and Allied forces in North Africa.

The obverse shows the Arco dei Fileni, a symbolic monument connected with Italian Libya and the coastal road between Tripolitania and Cyrenaica. Around the edge appears the bilingual inscription referring to the Italian-German campaign in Africa. The reverse depicts two stylised figures restraining a crocodile, a distinctive wartime allegorical design traditionally associated with the African front and its propaganda context.

This example retains its original ribbon in the colours linked to Italy and Germany. The ribbon shows visible age, fraying, staining and period wear, while the medal itself presents a darkened patina and natural surface ageing. These features give the piece a strong historic character and make it suitable for display within a serious IIWW militaria collection.
