Description
Original German Wasserkuppe Glider Badge – 1930s Aviation & Segelflug Collectible
This distinctive German aviation badge is a historical Wasserkuppe gliding commemorative pin, probably dating from the interwar period and most plausibly from the 1930s.
The circular metal badge features one of the most recognisable images associated with early German soaring history: a sailplane or glider in flight beside the Fliegerdenkmal on the Wasserkuppe, in the Rhön region of Germany.
The Wasserkuppe occupies an exceptional place in European aviation history. Experimental gliding activity developed there from the early twentieth century, and the mountain became internationally associated with motorless flight, record attempts, flying schools and major gliding competitions. Today the German Gliding Museum continues to describe the Wasserkuppe as the birthplace and historic centre of German gliding.
The Fliegerdenkmal Motif
The monument represented on the badge is the famous Fliegerdenkmal, situated on the western slope of the Wasserkuppe.
Its distinctive form consists of an eagle positioned above a naturalistic rocky pedestal. The memorial was inaugurated in 1923 in remembrance of German aviators killed during the First World War and quickly became one of the defining visual symbols of the Wasserkuppe.
On INS24, the monument appears in raised relief on the right side of the composition. A streamlined glider approaches from the upper left, while several stylised curved lines suggest clouds or atmospheric movement.
This combination of the glider and the Wasserkuppe aviation memorial was repeatedly used on German aviation medals, plaques, postcards and commemorative objects during the interwar years.
Auction catalogues document comparable Wasserkuppe pieces from around 1934 showing a glider flying beside or above the Fliegerdenkmal.
Construction
INS24 is a circular, bronze-toned metal badge with a raised relief design.
The obverse has a naturally aged golden-brown surface with darker areas of oxidation and patina. The relief remains clearly visible, particularly around the glider, the monument and the stylised cloud forms.
The reverse is plain apart from the negative impression and surface texture associated with the manufacture of the badge.
A horizontal pin fastening is mounted across the reverse, confirming that the piece was intended to be worn rather than functioning simply as a table medal or decorative plaque.
No manufacturer mark, date, award inscription or identifying number is visible in the supplied photographs.
Historical Attribution
The absence of inscriptions is important when cataloguing this piece.
The Wasserkuppe hosted numerous competitions, gatherings and aviation-related events during the 1920s and 1930s. Later, German gliding became increasingly controlled by state aviation organisations, particularly during the National Socialist period. However, the Wasserkuppe and its Fliegerdenkmal predate that regime by many years.
For that reason, INS24 should not automatically be described as an NSFK badge, Luftwaffe badge or official Third Reich award.
The most accurate description based on the surviving object is an interwar German Wasserkuppe gliding commemorative or souvenir pin, probably from the 1930s.
This cautious attribution preserves its genuine historical interest without assigning an unsupported event or organisation.
Condition
The badge remains in attractive aged condition.
The front retains a substantial amount of its bronze-toned surface, combined with natural dark patina, small marks, oxidation and colour variation developed over time.
The principal relief details remain clearly visible.
The reverse displays heavier dark toning and surface oxidation.
The horizontal pin remains present, including the hinge and catch arrangement visible in the photographs.
No cleaning, polishing or restoration is claimed.
The photographs form an integral part of the condition description.
Collector Interest
INS24 is especially interesting for collectors of:
German aviation memorabilia, early gliding history, Wasserkuppe collectibles, Rhön aviation, pre-WWII aviation badges, German sailplane memorabilia and European aviation history.
Unlike standard military decorations, pieces connected with the Wasserkuppe document the extraordinary development of German gliding culture between the two world wars, when the mountain became an internationally important centre for experimental flight and soaring.
The combination of the glider and the Fliegerdenkmal makes this a visually distinctive aviation collectible with a direct connection to one of Germany’s most historically important flying sites.
AUTHENTICITY
Authenticity guaranteed by Autographs & Militaria according to the cataloguing stated above.
The imagery corresponds with documented period Wasserkuppe aviation memorabilia showing sailplanes together with the Fliegerdenkmal.
No specific competition, organisation or manufacturer is attributed unless further documentary evidence becomes available.
