Description

Original Italian-German Africa Campaign Medal from the Second World War period, preserved with its period ribbon. This decoration is one of the most recognisable campaign medals associated with the North African theatre, where Italian and German forces operated together between 1941 and 1943.

Known in Italian as the Medaglia commemorativa della campagna italo-tedesca in Africa and in German as the Medaille für den italienisch-deutschen Feldzug in Afrika, this medal was created to commemorate the joint Axis campaign in North Africa. It is especially connected with the historical context of the Afrika Korps, the Italian Army in Libya and Egypt, and the wider desert war fought against British and Allied forces.

The obverse of the medal shows the Arco dei Fileni, a monument located on the coastal road between Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, used at the time as a symbolic reference to Italian presence in Libya. Around the edge appears the bilingual inscription referring to the Italian-German campaign in Africa. The reverse depicts two stylised figures restraining a crocodile, a wartime allegorical image commonly interpreted as a propaganda reference to the British enemy in the African theatre.

This example retains its original ribbon in the colours associated with Italy and Germany. The ribbon shows clear signs of age, wear, fraying and period handling, which should be considered part of the item’s historical character. The medal itself presents an attractive aged patina and remains a visually strong piece for display.

A desirable IIWW medal for collectors of North African campaign militaria, Afrika Korps related items, Italian-German wartime decorations, Axis campaign medals, desert war history and original Second World War collectibles. Its combination of symbolic design, bilingual inscription and direct connection to the African front makes it a historically interesting piece within any serious militaria collection.

Offered strictly as a historical collector’s item. This object is presented for documentation, study and preservation of military history only, with no political or ideological affiliation.
